This thread is for discussing and posting pictures of Luikse Vechter/Liege Fighters.

Luikse Vechters are a large breed of game chicken. Originating in Belgium, they are the result of cross breeding between the Bruges Game and large oriental gamefowl, most likely Malays. They were designed to be large and strong, and also to make a good meal. It has been said that roosters are known to take on hawks that threaten their flocks.

These are large birds, with males reaching up to or even exceeding 30 inches in height and weighing in at up to 12 pounds. The hens are smaller, and are decent layers of large cream colored eggs.

Despite their fiery nature and aggression towards other birds, they are friendly with their human keepers.

Currently I have a small flock with birds from three different breeders. So far I have found them to be awesome birds with outgoing personalities. They definitely have a dominant attitude and will fight with other birds to establish their dominance, even the hens.

Who else keeps this breed?

Crud, I forgot to get pictures. Today, darn it!

8 hatching currently! 1 pipped and more to come. Fingers crossed we get some healthy ones. First time with this breed and pretty excited.

Will the cockerels give others grief in a rooster flock? If not, we have other pastures to use. Would be great if everyone could, somewhat, get along though.

I've not tried mixing mine, but I will say I wouldn't try putting a cockerel from one of these guys with an adult rooster of another breed, unless you can supervise and make sure the other breed backs down, because these guys sure won't.

Good to know. Will most likely just keep them separate then. Or remove the other roos to their own area.

Counting chickens before they hatch, not a good idea... I’ll just wait to see how many I get first.
