Hi there,
My cayuga has recently hatched her baby. She is typically quite calm about me invading her space, she sometimes welcomes it. I entered their brooding pen this morning to try to hold her baby, and she was OK with me approaching him. He then jumped in the water with her (it's shallow enough for a duckling, but it still stresses her out when he swims.) when I picked him up out of the water, she became very protective and latched onto my leg without letting go. I put him back immediately, as I try to respect my animals' space. I understand I'll never be very close with this duckling, but I'd like to get to a place where the mom would comfortable with me holding her him. Is this possible?
Any tips would great!

My tiny little call ducks will try to climb up my leg flogging me if I touch their babies :lau
It's just a protective thang. . spend time just being around them when possible, lure them with treats.
I have 2 drakes that were raised by protective broodies that are grown now. I hardly ever touched them when they were little. But they come up and take treats from my hand now. I can't say they are as friendly as my incubator babies are. . but they don't flip out in my presence anymore.
