mandarin orange peel?

Can chickens eat the peel of a mandarin orange? its only one. i eat a couple a week, about 3. would it be ok to give my chickens the peeling? thanks!!

I don't think it would hurt them but I don't see any benefit if they find them edible, which is unlikely. I'd just throw them out

We throw almost all of our kitchen scraps in the run. The girls eat what they like, scratch the rest into the seep litter. Orange peels are a daily addition.

They won't eat it, but it will dry out and become one with the bedding/litter as chicken compost.

When they were just chicks, I'd cut citrus peels up into small bite sized chunks because I felt Vitamin C might help them. Now I throw the whole peels on top of all the free potatoes & onions which get steamed and cooled before feeding. I'm glad I trained them to eat citrus as I get so much free from the dollar store dumpster. They throw salads away too, which are eagerly and easily filling them up. The chickens are much more interested in feed pellets, but those free grapes seem to be on the top of the fav list & they'll drop anything to get ahold of another grape.

I'd be very hesitant about feeding your birds stuff from a dumpster, it could be laced with poison for vermin.

Good that you're careful! My local dollar store just bags up all of their produce regularly when the new shipment comes in a few times a week. It's really kinda crazy as the stuff is also packaged just right and I guess they just rotate all the produce stock frequently. I get free new garbage bags too - and it's always right on top too whenever I go there. They bag everything they throw away - amazingly. So - of course use your best judgements. Last week there was a 20 lb bag of cat food with just a small rip in the paper sack. I guess they just can't sell stuff that's imperfect somehow. A piece of 2 inch tape fixed it just fine. Do you know anyone who rescues stray cats?

Cat food makes a good chicken treat (in small quantities) and might help add protein to their diet (since you're feeding a lot of greens/fruit).
