This morning when I went down to the big aviary I found a young rooster dead in the pen without a mark on him so I thought the rain had killed him when I turned around there were egg shells everywhere. I went to the nest box where there was a ring teal sitting on ten eggs to find four eggs and a destroyed nest, a few feet away the greenwing teal nest was destroyed but no eggs were eaten. I turned around to find a dead redhead hen with her neck eaten off, then I found both the ring teal and greenwing teal hens almost completely eaten, their body parts were all over the pen. A little farther into the pen I found a dead wood duck drake and chicken that had had two babies all torn apart piled into a corner. Whatever predator did this had destroyed the pen and knocked a lot of stuff down. I had two barncle goslings hatch last week and both survived this attack but this afternoon I left the pen for twenty minutes and came back to a dead gosling in the middle of the pen. Last week we had a four foot black snake get in our grow out pen and eat a cinnamon teal and pintail that were almost fully feathered then it tried to eat another teal and killed it. I think a family of raccoons were the suspects for last nights massacre any thoughts? We hadnt had this great of a year in 35 years but now predators are killing everything we worked to raise this year! Any advice would be appreciated on how to catch these coons. The pen is now a minefield due to all the traps in it so hopefully they will come back tonight!

Sounds very suspicious for raccoons. There is nothing more disappointing than seeing your hard work and cherished birds destroyed. Im sorry. First step as you well know is to predator proof the pen. How did they get in? I've had success with the standard live trap but they are so very clever. Further , once they've found a source of free food they will be back. Good luck with the minefield.

So sorry for your losses. I know its after the fact but did you look for tracks? Hope you get all the culprits in the traps now at least. But if its a dog or dogs they may not fit in the traps Maybe you can get a electric fence. Also i dont know your situation where you are at. But maybe sitting out by the pen tonight with a spot light and a gun as well might solve the problem. Just some ideas. Just trying to help. I agree. they will be back. Again sorry it happened. It sucks.

We did find where they got in and that will be fixed today they had chewed through the netting on top of the pen and actually peeled some loose wire back to get in. I did look for tracks but somehow even though it has rained here all week they managed to not leave anything. Also we are planning on electrifying the fence soon. We caught a pretty good size coon last night but I am sure there have to be more and we will get them too. Sadly, I lost my other barnacle gosling today even after I took it up and put it in the brooder. None of the greenwing eggs were fertile but the ring teal eggs were. Also the one young ring teal I have now is a female so we will not have to find another one. Hopefully, things will go better from now on!

The line most often mumbled under our breath with a heavy coating of frustration and disgust around here is " you caint have nothin'". We have found the reality of farming is that something is always after what you have be it livestock, vegtables, or fruit. It's simply a constant battle. We just pick up the pieces, try not to cry, and keep on going. Again, sorry for your losses but you seem to be on the right track. My experience is that anything but 1/2 inch hardware cloth and a pen built like a fortress and locked is vulnerable. An electric wire around the base of the perimeter to prevent digging sounds like a good idea. Best of luck.

We say that all the time! We are going to cover every where the netting is connected to a pole with wire now we had already done some of the poles like this and it worked. Snakes will continue to be our biggest problem here as they are almost impossible to keep out but we will definitely fix the pen up to keep everything else out from now on.

Yesterday morning, we found more victims. A young domestic duck without any visible injuries, a young pintail hen with a punctured eye, a young ancona that was limping around the pen, a almost completely feathered giant canada gosling with a mangled face (still living), another canada gosling that could not walk but had no visible injuries and we are not sure if one bird is completely gone. It avoided all the traps in the upper part of the pen and attacked the lower part of the pen. We also found a chukar dead from the last attack and the predator had caught him and tried to take him out of the pen as there were feathers and blood on the wire leading right to a hole that was overlooked before so we are praying they dont come back and get more birds as the ones that are left are some of the more expensive like the cans and lesser scaup. We are also thinking that the first attack was stopped short by our pair of barnacles that had gosings because we found the wire guards around the plants busted up and bent later that night and that may explain why the babies died they may have been stepped on or hit by the parents wings in the fight but we will never know.

The pen is huge with many smaller pens attached! We haven't had any attacks since we sealed the hole and we also installed a light on the pen that comes on at night so hopefully that helps in the future we also may be getting a large dog to have down there in the future
