I’ve been doing a lot of searching on what to buy for my next breed of chicken. But, I couldn’t find a comprehensive list (that I could sort), so I made my own!

Don’t get me wrong, Henderson’s Chicken chart is awesome. But, it just won’t sort and has tons more information than I need.

All I wanted to do was to find the best Big Brown Frequent Egg Layers out there. So, I typed in 75+ Breeds on a spreadsheet.
(In retrospect, it was a long way around to find out that I already knew. That Red Sex Links, and Black Australorp are the breeds I was looking for (and already have...)

But, I'm sure it will benefit someone else here...)

The spreadsheet is currently sorted by Egg Production, and then Egg Size.
Here is the entire 6 page sheet. I'll update later with it Alphabetized.

For display on this thread, here are the first 2 pages.
[If anyone/any admin can tell me how to display a spreadsheet, or a .pdf with the BBCode, I’d gladly post full updates to this first post!]

Here’s what would be really cool.
1) Be able to post the entire spreadsheet on this post
2) Have a discussion on what needs to be updated on the spreadsheet
3) Have a spirited discussion on what breeds are the best (at doing what…)
4) If this post could become popular enough to be a sticky post! Waahoo!

Anyway, this was tons of work, so I’d love your (constructive) comments!

Update: I've sorted by Breed Name and put the .pdf file here.

Here are the first two pages of alphabitized Breeds

I made a similar Excel spreadsheet of characteristics I was looking for and the Red Stars (sex links), Easter Eggers, Australorps were my top 3. After buying EE'er and Red Stars, I'd never buy EE'er again. I will buy Red Stars again though.

I like EE's, but only for the egg color. They don't lay as early, or as often. Plus they're a bit more skittish than RSL. I've decided this year on Barred Plymouth Rocks...
