Hello anyone out there that lives in McCullom Lake, IL! We are new to area and want to raise chickens as pets and for eggs. Was curious if anyone knew about the ordinances of this "village" or do they follow McHenry City or county ordinances? When we called the village to ask they said no chickens, but was confused about if the county or city rules applied? What are the consequences of getting caught? If there is anyone with some insight we would like to know :) there are cornfields, a farm, and even horses all around our neighborhood, I don't understand why we can't have chickens?

Welcome to BYC!

If you want to chat with your chicken neighbors, you can do that in your state thread and see what they do about the laws or if they have ever tried to change them...

You can also take a look at our Local Chicken Laws and How To Change Them section and maybe glean some info on your area and what to do about it....

Great starting points! Welcome to BYC, and good luck in being able to raise chickens.

Generally, if they are not allowed and you get caught - you have a certain time period to rehome the birds, beyond that fines, etc.

There always seems to be a neighbor or two or three that feels it is their duty to turn you in, even if your flock isn't causing any problems.

Yea we live on a big lot and plan on fencing it in, planting some trees for privacy, but I always watch the surrounding neighbors to see which one would be the ones to complain. It's kind of a quiet neighborhood so I worry about some one hearing them, but there's definitely very loud annoying barking dogs and that neighbor with the blaring music and the p.o.s. cars and trucks that drive by
