13 week EE somehow tore her beak. Loose flap on side. Not eating or drinking. Took her to vet and she tried an adhesive (wouldn't hold). She prescribed Metacam (1.5mg/ml). Pullet weighs 2.4 pounds and the dosage they prescribed is 1.1 ml every 24 hrs. That seems high to me. What I find online seems to suggest closer to .5 - .8 ml for a full grown hen. Anyone else used this before?

I tried calling in to ask if they were sure that was the right amount but they are closed for the day. (They see chickens but not regularly). I just don't want to overdose her.

Vet doesn't think she will make it. Am trying to syringe feed "starter" soup but she is not being cooperative and can't handle her beak area without causing more pain. :(

TIA

The dose my vet has me use is 0.2 mg/kg twice a day, so yeah, that does seem high to me too.

at 0.2 mg/kg for a 2.4 pound hen:
2.4 / 2.2 x 0.2 / 1.5 = 0.145 ml

Thank you everyone. I am going to go with a lower dosage tonight and the call in the am. You guys rock. I am new to chickens and I have had cats, dogs and horses since I was a kid, but chickens are a whole different ballgame!

Do let us know what they say! Oh, and welcome to BYC!
