I'm honestly not very experienced with different colors of rabbits. I have one doe whose color I haven't been able to make out. She has ticking like an agouti but her color is closer to orange. I asked a breeder I know and she says that the doe is broken orange with smut. Is this true? When writing the color down (for instance, on a pedigree), would you just say broken orange?

Yes, Broken Orange. Orange is an Agouti-based color, which is why it shows banding. The non-extension gene causes the light colored band on the hairs of the Orange to be wider than usual, which is why it appears much lighter than a Chestnut Agouti. The non-extension gene does't remove all of the dark pigment; there is still a little bit on the tips of the hairs. When that color is black, we call it smut. The best Oranges have Chocolate genes. Because brown and orange are fairly similar visually, you don't really notice brown tips on the ends of the hairs on an Orange, and the general effect is of one fairly even color, rather than ticking.

I'm not really any good at explaining things, but I'll have a go :) A colour like smoke pearl marten, is just smoke pearl but martenised, right? The smoke pearl, is just a shaded self blue, and the smoke pearl marten is just a shaded blue otter. So if a rabbit is just self orenge, then you magicaly martenised it, it would have the white rings around its eyes ( like the rabbit in this post does), white insides of the ears, white bits in the nose, and will be white under neath. It would be orenge otter. If you magicaly changed the rabbit again to BROKEN orenge otter, then im pretty sure thats just what the mini lop is, with the darker agouti bits like Bunny lady said. I still don't get the genetic side of these things, thats just identification :) Some one else will have to tell you the geneticy things to do with it. Please some one correct me if Im wrong though XD
