I really wanted some French Copper Marans.I couldn't find any chicks or hatching eggs locally so I decided to buy some hatching eggs on EBay.It was my first time buying eggs and getting them shipped to my house.I was aware that hatching eggs bought on EBay usually don't have best hatching rate.Taking that into consideration I wanted to make sure eggs I purchased were located within 2 or 3 days shipping.I live in California and was able to purchase 6 Eggs from Oregan. Shipping should only take 2 maybe 3 days at most. My eggs arrived at my house 7pm 8 days after being shipped.I can only imagine what those eggs went thru over 8 days being moved from truck to transfer station back onto truck then spending 10 hours on delivery guys truck being tossed around every time driver makes delivery.When driver handed me my package he told me I was his last delivery.After finally receiving package I wasn't feeling to confident with successful hatch but seller included 4 extra eggs giving me a little hope .I let eggs sit big end up for about 12 hours before putting in incubator.11 days into incubation I candled eggs they didn't look to good but Maran eggs are hard to see into so I kept incubating.Day 16 rotten egg exploded had to move eggs to different incubator to clean incubator they were in.Day 17 egg explodes in incubator have to move back to original incubator.Day 18 2 more eggs explode.By now my while house stinks of rotten eggs and nothing I can do about it.Day 21 nothing.Day 22 I here peep from 2 eggs.Day 23 1 chick hatched healthy or died before it could hatch.
Pretty upset with only the 1 chick(mostly because it's hard on chick not having other chicks for warmth and companionship)chick is 2 days old and doing good.I decide to make a new lid for brooder.Old lid had chicken wire windows I want to change to plexiglass with holes drilled in it for fresh air.Finished me a lid everything looked good turned on heat lamp and put chick inside went about my day.About 3 hours later go to check on chick and it's 115°f inside brooder.I immediately pull chick out and wet rag with cold water.I wrap chick up in wet rag trying to cool down body temp.It took a while but I was able to cool chick down.Only problem was it couldn't stand up it would try but it had no sense of balance.This went on for hours I finally decided nothing more I could do and I went to bed.Next morning chick was fine peeping and running around.I decided to go back to old brooder lid. A few days later I was cleaning tabletop that brooder sits on. I had to place brooder on floor.My clothes dryer buzzed . I ran down to garage and grab clothes .When I get back upstairs I see brooder with chicken wire lid ripped apart and chick is gone.I immediately begin screaming running around looking for my dog.I find my dog laying down in front room.My first thought is he ate my little baby chick but as I'm looking around there are no feathers anywhere.A few minutes go by and I hear peep peep.Peep peep peep in looking all around finally I follow sound to my dog.He is laying on top of chick.I grab chick kick dog out of house.Then carefully inspect for any injuries.It was a Miracle not a scratch on that little chick.That was about 3 week ago and I'm happy to say no incidents since then.
