I’ve had my fair share of “missing-duck scares,” that is, thinking a duck is missing, when really they’re just around the corner, doing their own thing. Usually it’s my elder drake, Cherry, who likes his alone time.
Today, however, I went out on my back porch to count the ducks, and someone else was missing: My youngest girl, Peppermint. I’ve never seen her away from the group, and I knew she wasn’t broody, so it was a concern to say the least.
I went out in the yard to look around, expecting the worst, and that’s when I saw her:
In the pond, by herself.. sleeping?
Now I understood. She was having such a good nap, she didn’t realize all the other ducks had left already!
I walked down to her, maybe a good 10 feet away, and said, “Hello? Ma’am?” She perked her head up and looked around with the most confused expression I’ve ever seen! She took a few moments to swim and check her surroundings a bit more before finally making the loud, ducky alarm sound.
I could tell she was too nervous to come up and look for the group on her own, so I walked back up to the porch and fetched her boyfriend, Guava. He ran down to greet her, reassured her it was safe, and guided her up to the porch with everyone else.
As a reward for being so brave, she got some tasty mealworms, and all was well
