I have a hen who I thought was past molting, but she has quit laying and is really losing feathers again.
This is the timeline:
1Oct24 - Stopped laying, and started molting approx 1 week after.
1Dec24 - (Approx Date) Stopped molting
10Dec24 - Started Laying again, laying an egg every other day until 22Dec24
22Dec24 - Stopped laying
29Dec24 - (Approx) Started losing feathers again, and in the last couple of days, it has been a lot of feathers.
Do they ever go "eh, not finished molting" and give it one last go, or do I treat for mites/lice? She doesn't show signs of mites/lice, although I have not checked her over, in case she is molting again, I don't want to try to handle her, and I haven't treated her, in case she is prickly from losing so many feathers. I did a coop check, including late at night, checking the roost around their feet and where they were, and didn't get any signs of pests. I put Sevin dust underneath the nexting pads and in crevices of the coop where mites/lice might hide. Her sister is not showing signs of pests either, and although a bit sporadic, has been laying since she quit molting, and is not losing any feathers.
I am wondering which direction to go with her since I don't want to do anything that might make her more uncomfortable if this is more molting, but I have no idea if this is "normal" molting behavior or not.
