Hello everyone! I have a mixture of chickens, RIRs, leghorn, black copper Maran, speckled sussex, black sussex, buff orpington....12 total. I live in Southern Louisiana, very humid, mosquitoes are the STATE BIRD here! Lol! I have a mosquito light on in coop all the time. (It's a bulb that has a zapper) i just looked at them last night and noticed a couple or few of them running around. Wonder if the light being on messes with their system? Messes with their laying? (None have started laying yet) messes with them getting the proper amount of rest?
They are different ages as well...the oldest being almost 5 months old...youngest prob 1-2 Mos? Don't know if that even matters.,.I love my babies and the thought just occurred to me I may be stressing them out! (Even with the light on, I get so many bites, I'm afraid they may get sick from them if they get too many 😪🤔) thank you in advance for your time and advise!

Yes, @Luvnmychickychicks it might mess with their circadian rythym.
I'd keep the zapper out in the run.
A better deterrent in the coop is a fan blowing just so on the roost,
will help cool them down and also keep the skeeters away from them.

As far as I know the only disease mosquitoes carry that affect chickens is dry pox, a virus. Not a serious concern most the time. Don't worry until you see black spots on their combs and wattles.

I found this old thread..

maybe it will help you. you might need to confirm the information with others though
I wouldn't jump right to antibiotics....before a bird is even sick.

Bug lights draw in bugs that are attracted to light like moths. Mosquitos are attracted to blood so they seek warm bodies. I used bug zappers for a while and found lots of moths and beneficial bugs in the tray. Got rid of them after that.
Yes the light will disrupt your birds sleep.
I agree with aart, a fan will better protect your birds.

@aart My comment was ment for another post? Mmm last I had one comment which became it’s own thread ... maybe something goes wrong with my account sometimes or with page refreshment... will keep an eye on it and otherwise mention this in the appropriate topic...

I treat my animals with as less antibiotics as possible..
