I have 2 mottled Java pullets and 2 mottled Java cockerels.
I got them from a breeder local to me as baby chicks back in the beginning of June.
The pullets are all black and the cockerels black with buff leakage.
I was told by the breeder that they mottling pattern would get better as they age but they are almost 5 months old and the pullets are solid black.
Is this normal for mottled Java breed?

I would have thought the pullets are black Java but the leakage on the male is not typical for a black Java, so you’ve been jipped.
So I paid $8 per chick for Javas that are neither breed standard color for a black Java or a mottled Java...
Dang..

I have Mottled Java's and none of them are all black. They start out darkly colored with some white spattering that turns more into white with black spots or black with white spots later on. The spots are more "mottled" than have a pattern like other spotted breeds. I'm working with some rare breeds and so far, I find them slower to grow, but not much slower. They are a bit more aloof than some other breeds, but they're not impossible. I have 8 pullets with these and I'm trying to locate a rooster. I've heard of some genetic issues with Mottled Java's, so we are going to see if I need to introduce another blood line and then breed back to correct issues.
