Do all chicks look like this when they are sleeping?
DSC07602.jpg

I walked outside to see how they were doing and found all 16 of them sleeping! But it looked like they were all dead!

Also what do you suggest I do about the floor? They poop like crazy and it is getting on their feet. I just changed the newspaper 2 hours ago and it looks gross!

Mine always looked like that when they were sleeping. Dead always looks different. Laying on their side, beak open, any which way really. Scary to think they're dead, isn't it!!??

Yes--kinda scary, isn't it! Especially the way they just sort of fall over. Don't worry, they are okay. Aren't they so cute that way, though!

LOL! I put a wood block in their for them to play king of the castle on! (which is funny!) Some of them try and sleep on it and fall off! I can't help but to laugh!!

Cute chickies! So peaceful! So, So Sweet!

I use paper towels when my chicks are little - the paper towel helps their little feet grip and gain strength. Sometimes newspapaper can be a little "slick" and it can contribute to splay legged babies.

Once they have a good start and are eating well and growing I start using pine shavings.

Good luck with yours...you seem to be enjoying them...that's always a good thing! Have fun!

Pine shavings are good, with a few layers of paper towel on top of the shavings at first. Then you can lift up the top layer of paper towel when it gets too dirty. After several days, you can use only shavings, and stir them up or layer new shavings on top. Then you change out all the shavings about every week...give or take depending on how many chicks you have.

I used puppy pads that I changed twice a day for about 5 days, then I used wood pellets.

LOVED the wood pellets over shavings because they obsorb the moisture and dry the poo droppings within minutes.

Rimshoes - it looks like you are using cedar shavings in your brooder or is it just the coloring?

Cedar shavings are bad.
