Hi everyone,
Our girls have gone through their first molting and along with some of the body feathers the silkies have lost their poofs.. I’ve given it a few months to see if their bodies needed to focus on the warm feathers for their core for winter warmth, but sadly they seem to barely start to generate anything but a comb-over plume here and there resembling, yes, grumpy old men. It’s just 3 hens and they are all laying, although take breaks here and there. We have hemp bedding which is kept very clean and all the natural bug repellents but of course it’s winter so it’s not really bug season. There’s no blood or sign of losing in a scuffle and it’s been gradual. Our bigger girl, an Orpington gets along with the silkies and they usually snuggle together in the coop.
Any thoughts? Is this maybe just a slow process of molting for the first time? Adding a pic from last summer before the balding began
