I just wanted to show off my Employee of the Month (& her freeloading sisters). All are Orpington's and in assorted shades.
Lady Cordelia started laying 23 days ago, and has given us 22 eggs so far (ranging in size from 1.8-2.0oz but usually it’s 1.9). She is also funny in that she has started laying earlier and earlier each day- and so gives us an egg every 23.75 hours instead of a bit later each day for the 26 hour laying schedule. She doesn’t even make a fuss or egg song, just goes in, lays her egg and gets on with her day.
(Lady Cordelia Fitzgerald)
Now, her sisters as still freeloading at the moment, but they try to make up for it with lots of cuddles and being dedicated lap chickens.
From the left: Mrs Lynde, Miss Stacey and Diana Berry (Sadly Marilla & Anne turned out to be Roos and had to leave the flock a few months ago).
Mrs Lynde is a whiteish Lavender with lovely orange markings & is our resident “Lady McFloof”. She only chirps tiny raspy peeps and is a lady thru and thru and is always quiet and gentle (she’s bottom of the pecking order). However, she is our most enthusiastic bug hunter and will actually sit on my one hand and let me hold her 6 feet up the air to reach spiders/bugs on the top of the run.
Miss Stacey is top of the pecking order and has a DEEP DEEP “buuurp” cluck sound and while she is top of the pecking order, she rarely does anything about it- but all give her the respect she deserves. She’s not as confidant with jumping up in my lap (her balance isn’t as nimble as the rest) and so when she wants a cuddle, she walks over to my foot, climbs on towards my ankle and gently pecks at my pant leg. I then raise my foot and she walks to my lap on the bridge of my leg. She’s such a hefty and deep voiced girl that is always in charge, so I joke her nickname should be Olga. We also like to drink together and she always wants a few sips of my adult beverage (but only a few drops!), but the rest don’t like it.
And then my little hugger Diana. She anxiously waits every time for me to come sit down, launches herself into my lap and then demands hugs. Yes, demands. She leans towards me and gets tall and expects me to wrap my arms around her so she can nuzzle her head into my neck. She wants to be held like this for a few moments and then when you let go, she turns and nuzzles into the other shoulder and usually sighs or purrs. If you let go before she is “done” she will gently peck at your shirt, or scratch her foot on your pants, or try to walk up your chest to get closer to you. It’s really cute! She doesn’t stray far from my lap when I’m sitting down. So, I’m guessing I won’t get eggs from these 3 freeloaders until spring (since they are now 7 months old and still not laying), but they are so sweet I can’t mind
