Help please,
We are brand new to raising chickens. We have 3-day old chicks, and today my 7-year old got impatient and gave them a few kernels of fresh corn as a treat. She says she mashed them up but I’m afraid they may have eaten whole corn kernels. Up until this point they have only had starter food. I have now put a little bit of chick grit in a dish and made it available. What else should I do? How dangerous is it that they got corn this early?
Thank you, and I understand that it’s unacceptable that my daughter was able to give the chicks the corn without me supervising and realizing what was going on. We are addressing that issue to keep our chicks safe from our kids.
Any advice for what to watch for now that they’ve had fresh corn at 3 days old would be very appreciated.

Hug your baby girl, She was trying to love on those baby chickens. Yes, she -may- have -made a boo boo ( perhaps, perhaps not) But her heart was in the right place- She was actually being responsible in her eyes. ♥

I am not real sure you can do anything but crush up that grit really fine and put a bit into their crumbles. ( just a tiny bit)

I certainly do not think that bit of corn will permanently damage them. Think like this. If momma chick was taking care of those babies- they would be walking around in the yard eating what she does, they may get a bit of corn on HER watch- and mamma chick is never wrong. ❤

If it's just a couple of kernels and it was only once, then they should be fine. Adult chickens routinely eat things that are large in proportion to their bodies, like frogs -- a kernel of corn is about the same size in proportion to a chick's body.
Also, chicks in the wild are fed bugs and seeds by their mother, and they turn out just fine, usually.
I think that your chicks will be fine. The corn should just go right through their little systems, especially if the kernels were mashed.
Good luck with them, and let us know if anything goes wrong.

The chicks may gobble up the grit if you make it available in a separate dish. Mine did when I provided it at day three. This prepared their gizzards for foods other than their chick starter, then I was able to start offering crushed dried mealworms a day or two later. I think both your chicks and your child will be fine! 😉
