I built a self serve egg stand. It has a mini fridge and locked cash box inside of it. I have been selling a lot of eggs.

I've been pushing this idea on my DH for over a year now. We live in a rural area and have a lot of local neighbor customers whom currently have to ring a bell we mounted on our gate or some blow theirs horns.
We have to walk an acre to the gate to ask their order, walk the acre back to the barn fridge, then an acre back to the gate and an acre back after the gate. ONLY to have another neighbor come 30 mins later.
Some days I walk way to much. Other days I have to drop what I am doing way too often.

Your post has re inspired me into keep pushing my husband into helping me build our egg box.

Questions:
  • If you had to make another, what would you do differently?
  • Can you take a close up pic of the cash box?
  • How do you secure it at night?
  • How often does a dishonest person take advantage of the honesty program?
I love how the decoration theme matches your chicken house BTW.
Great idea and thread. Thank you for sharing.

I place a cooler at the end of my driveway, with a freezer pack, a jar in the cooler for money. a sign at the end of our road where it meets a more traveled road. Not a lot of customers, but, it's helping a bit. Would love to have a little fridge for an outside stand. If I did so, I could then be selling produce as well. Perhaps some day.

If I had to make another egg stand I would enclose the entire bottom in case I wanted to put a bigger mini fridge in it later or sell goat milk soap.

The cash box is a $3 plastic Wal-Mart tool box with a paddle lock attached to the loop hole and a chain screwed to the wall and mini fridge door hinge to prevent people from stealing the mini fridge, cash box and opening the cash box. It's a triple locking system.

I ran a chain around the legs of the egg stand and bolted and paddle locked the egg stand to a wall. So people can't steal the egg stand at night.

I haven't had anyone steal eggs or take advantage of the honesty system yet. If they do they must be real hard up.
