I have a 3 year old Buff Orpington that has Mycoplasma Synoviae. (Note - she is also blind with Merrick's Disease) We don't have a specialty vet in our area, but our regular vet has been treating her. She has lanced the infected joint, as it was horribly hot with heat from the infection and red, but now it is not healing. She did get a lot of pus and necrotic stuff out though. I have been giving her Doxcycline 50 mg twice a day for 15 days. Also keeping her isolated in the house. Changing bandage every-other-day.

When we began, infection was in one location of leg, it moved further up leg within first 7 days. Went back to vet this morning for our 2nd - 7 day follow-up. Leg is worse now than when we started.

She now has 2 areas of infection that are open. Our vet has given her another week and then giving up hope for me to euthanize. I'm willing to try something else.

I should add that she is not having any breathing problems, all the problem is confined to the one leg.

I'm a new chicken owner and Shirley is a rescue I took in when my new chicks were 3 weeks old. They are now 18 weeks.

She is happy, sings and cackles all the time. Appetite is great and follows us around like a dog. A sweet chicken worth trying something else before giving up. I have no idea where to start. I've attached an image of her foot this from this morning.

Can someone help please?

Would you be willing to try essential oils? I haven't dealt with this type of infection but citrus oils like orange or bergamot are supposed to help. Or you can bring in the big guns and use (diluted) cinnamon bark or oregano oil. If it were my girl, I would also try colloidal silver soak (that would be an expensive option but I make my own). I wish I knew more about it to be more help and I hope she hangs tough!!

Yes, I am open to essential oils. I know nothing about them though. I'd love to learn, but just not taken the time to do a class or course. I also have a bottle of colliodal silver - but no idea how to use it.

I'll take any guidance at this point. She is awesome.

The colloidal silver, you can just dab on several times a day with a cotton ball or squeeze the cotton ball so the liquid drips into the wound, and/or give her a few drops 3x day along her beak so she swallows it.

I've just looked at the Denagard. I am understanding this is put into her water? Would she get enough to heal in a few days or how long can I expect? I've reached out to chat to the link you provided to ask questions, but not getting response.

Can I assume the colloidal silver is same for chickens and humans? I have a bottle for humans. It is in my preparedness stock. Attached an amazon image of the brand I have

It is. I way overpaid for some at my vet and it was the same stuff. Depending how long it has been in your stock though, it may not still be viable. Check to make sure it hasn't passed it's use-by date. While I will surpass other use-by dates by years in my storage, the silver will degrade over time and just becomes dirty looking water instead of a useful medicine.

I do feel the need to throw in a disclaimer: I have only successfully treated respirator infection in my chickens with colloidal silver. I haven't yet had the need to treat anything else in my flock (knock on wood). I do use it for my family and other pets for various infections as well though.

Denagard works, & it has many positive online reviews. U have to change water daily; the med isnt stable in water after 24 hours. I used it several years ago to treat several point of lay hens i purchased that came down with mg their first winter. I used denagard to treat the hens, then a few months after as a monthly preventative. They never again showed symptoms after the initial symptoms went away (Even tho chickens with mg/ms remain carriers for life. Some of your pullets may show symptoms soon too if they have been exposed. No danger in also giving them denagard as preventative. Mycoplasma has no resistance to denagard.. Ive never used colloidal silver, but can vouch thst denagard works. Denagard is a treatment for swine, & not approved for poultry in u.s, even tho it has been approved for poultry in europe for over 25 years. For that reason your vet probably cant approve or recommend. (I doubt many vets would suggest colloidal silver either.) The leg looks bad, but dont give up without trying a different treatment, since the doxy isnt working.
