We have to Nigerian Dwarf kids that my girls will be showing and I'm really not sure what kind of collars, leads and other supplies might be needed. I have seen choker chains, nylon collars and some leather stuff. Any advice from people already showing. The kids are two months old and will be 5 months old at show time. I would love any advice!

The smaller dog choke collars are perfect but don't use it like a choke collar. It's nice to put one of those little metal snaps or a clip on it and use it like that but we also used zip ties to secure the two big rings together at the end of the collars and then just cut the ties after the show. We don't keep collars on them at home.

Be careful about the leads. Some judges will allow a very short lead on juniors but others don't want any type of lead on a goat in the ring. The standard breeds can not be shown with a lead at any age so you need to check the show rules for that info.

Good Luck!

Our goat group advises to use choker chains in the ring but for kids it is ussualy ok to use a nylon collar.

I really like the look that Show Sheine gives the goat. It's a bit expencive but worth it in the long run if you have any competition. Bring leashes for waiting in line but be sure to take it off for showmenship(most) judges don't like leashes in the ring. Bring baking soda incase a goat gets an upset rumon. Take sissors to clip missed hair and to do the tail. Baby wipes for their tail, ears, and feet. Oh and small panels and electrical ties or string because Nigis can squeeze trough the regular show stalls! Oh and if it is or will be cold at the show see what everyone else is doing as far as shaving. A shaved goat usualy places over a fuzzy one but a sick goat still costs most. Also bring lawn chairs!

You will also need Health certificates and don't forget to have the goats tatooed before the show! (We missed one last show.

Wow. So much to learn. We got our goats two hours from here, but I wish we had some one close to help teach us. How should the choke chain fit? Just like it would on a dog? Do you hold it by the two circles that I have tied together. Does anyone have a good site that talks about showing, clipping, grooming. I use to show dairy cows growing up, but things are totally different now even with them. I would like to know how you walk (with dairy it was backwards for the exhibitor). How about setting the kid up? Placing its feet. Anyone near Beckley WV have goats?

Hey Debbie...
I am going to my first show this weekend! I am very nervous! I will be showing one of my ND girls and my daughter will show another; they will be in the same class. I hope they do well but they are young and we are inexperienced so we will see...I am trying to not get my hopes up.

I am fortunate to have a local breeder that is showing me the ropes, she has been so helpful. I hope you can find someone to help you too. Maybe I can pass on some info to you after the show.

I will be watching what responses you get here too!

I would love to hear all about your experience and please do pass on any info. Where did you get the collars, etc for showing. I'm worried we will get there and be the only one with certain things and then not have some stuff we might need. I do tend to be a worry wart though! I wish you lots of luck or this weekend and look forward to any advice you will have when you get back.
