Just found out our roommate's dog (4 months old, never had a vet appointment and is a Rez dog, aka no prenatal care or puppy care) has round worms. He poops in the backyard where my entire flock free ranges. I'm furious, I'd rather get rid of the dog but it's not my decision so now I need to worm my birds.

I have 12 chickens, ranging from 4-5 month old pullets/cockerel and a 1 year old rooster. I also have 2 2 months old ducks and 7 2.5 week old ducklings.

What can I use?? No one is laying yet so withdrawal isn't an issue, I do plan on eating the birds eventually so nothing that prevents consumption forever.

Please share what I can use! Can Wazine be used on ducklings? I plan on creating a deworming schedule, preferably deworming twice a year plus natural methods (DE & ACV) between the gap. Please share your schedule of deworming your birds!

You can use apple cider vinegar which is a gentle wormer and is natural and good for the birds health but isn’t very strong which is why it is used weekly or monthly as a gentle wormer. For a stronger wormer you can use a poultry wormer that you can buy at many pet shops. These ones though will mean that you won’t be able to use the birds for meat for a couple of weeks-months depending on the strength. The one I use here in Australia is called kilverm. It doesn’t affect egg production and says to use less than 7 days before you kill the birds. Hope this helps.

If you can, get ahold of pumpkins and bust them up to feed to your birds, seeds and all.
The seeds kill worms ! See the pics of a coop poop tray the day after I fed pumpkin:

** large winter squash also works well, like acorn, sweet meats and so on.
The poop tray is a shelf under the roost in all my coops.
What you see was what the birds poo'd out overnight.
I also use Eprinex 2x a year, spring & fall, on all my birds.
A small squirt on the back of their necks done under cover of darkness, works great !
We use red flashlights on head bands & go into the coops and squirt each bird.
I believe the dosage is .5 ml for bantam & 1.ml for a large fowl (8-10#)
Eprinex is safe for you to eat the eggs afterwards.
I have also seen recent posts about the use of Fenbendazole being OK'd for use on fowl.

@dawg53
Have you tried worming the dog? Seems like the fastest way to take care of this issue. And I'm pretty sure you can buy puppy roundworm medication for less than ten bucks at Walmart.
My husband would rather not due to the amount of money we've already spent on the dog because of his "owners" negligence. Plus our birds free range in a wild bird heavy area so I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Apple cider vinegar and/or DE will NOT prevent nor treat worms.
@TabbiMae Dog worms are generally host specific except for hookworms. Chickens and humans can get hookworms in contact with contaminated dog feces. Other types of dog roundworms are not zoonotic.
Go to a feed store and buy a dog wormer for your roommate's dog. Purchase "Nemex 2" wormer, it's not expensive at all. Dosage is 1 teaspoonful per 10 pounds of body weight. Mix it in a small amount of food for the dog to eat. Redose again at 10 weeks of age. See the label on the bottle for further instructions if needed. The wormer is very palatable and safe. It contains Pyrantel Pamoate.
Use Valbazen or Safeguard liquid goat wormer for your chickens. They kill other types of worms that cant be seen in feces as well as large roundworms.

Thank you! The dog is older than 10 weeks, he is 4 months old.

Okay. You'll need to weigh him. Dosage is by weight, 5ml per 10 pounds (one teaspoon.)
Shake the Nemex bottle well and mix the proper dose with a small amount of food. Then repeat again in 14 days.

If you think the ground is heavily contaminated with worm eggs, worm monthly thereafter. However after the first month of treatment, I'd take a fecal sample to a vet for testing and it shouldnt cost much.
It might be best to get a 6 month supply of Heartgard Plus from the vet. It will prevent heartworms as well as other worms. Or perhaps Trifexis, it takes care of fleas, ticks, all worms except tapeworms. But you'd know it if the dog had tapeworms.
