I am a first time chicken and duck owner. I reside outside of Houston, Texas. They are all 3 weeks old. I have 5 chicks and 3 ducks. Today I noticed a lump on one of the ducks neck. It seems to be gasping for air and breathing heavy. I was reading up and it states that they can store their food there before it goes to their stomach. The other 2 ducks don’t have it. They did just eat and drink so I’m hoping this is the case. Should I be concerned? Is this normal? She seems to be acting normal otherwise. They have constant food and water. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Cute duck!

I presume they are only getting chick/duck starter or all flock crumbles?

That looks like it's its crop to me. It should go down then back up again.

Be sure not to give them anything but their crumbles until at least a month to six weeks old, and then if you do give them like scrambled eggs or something, they'll need grit for their gizzards to grind it up.

Thank you. Yes the ducks are on crumble with niacin. What age should I introduce pellets?
Mine will always be on crumbles as they and the chicks and chickens are all on Kalmbach's Flock Maker crumbles.

If you want to convert them to pellets, any time is fine.
