So after 4.5 years, I’m finally a chicken owner again! I lost all of my hens and my coop during Hurricane Harvey. I was not going to replace anything, but when the opportunity to purchase lavender Orpingtons arose, I just had to do it. So my husband and I spent the better part of this weekend converting the back end of my 10x16 pool shed into a new coop. I will use the attached garden area as the run. Currently I am only storing pool supplies and a lawnmower in the other half of the shed. I never had to deal with chicken dust before because they had their own dedicated coop. So I am hoping that it does not pose too big of a problem.
We still need to add a pop door, roosts and later on the nesting boxes. In the next few weeks I will reinforce/secure the run area with chicken wire and netting over the run.
It has been a while, but I am happy to be a chicken mama again!!

Don't forget the desperately needed copious amounts of permanent ventilation for the coop.
Anything in that building is going to be coated in dust. And I mean COATED.
I would also avoid using chicken wire for anything other than partitioning inside the coop. It is not remotely predator proof.
Congratulations on your lavender Orpingtons!

I do have a question…Should I paint the floor

Absolutely!!! I forgot to mention ventilation. Yes, definitely will be adding as there is none in this building. ☺️

I painted the floor in my shed to coop with 2 coats of Behr Porch & Floor paint. It's held up very well but the chickens don't spend much time in the coop except during the more brutal times of winter.
It wouldn't hurt as an insurance policy, especially if you keep any type of water source in there.

Thanks! That will be my task for today.:)

Added this exhaust fan to the shed today. It pulls a lot of air out of the coop/shed. Going to be a lifesaver come summertime!!!

Pullet Shut chicken door is in and ready for when they are. Need to make a few adjustments for aesthetic purposes, but working fine over all. Time to finish up preparing their run.♥️

Keep a very close eye on the fan motor and remove dust as it builds up. I use an air nozzle on my air compressor set at 120 psi.
