Hi everyone!

I'm so excited to finally be a part of the backyard chicken world! I just got my very first batch of chicks a few days ago, and I’ve already fallen in love with every one of them. 😍

I’m new to chicken keeping, so I’m learning as I go, and one thing I’d really appreciate help with is figuring out the breeds of my chicks. They cam from a hatchery, and were labeled as "assorted standard and rare", so it's a bit of a mystery right now.

I'll be posting a video in the thread below—hopefully someone here with a more experienced eye can help me out! Any tips, breed guesses, or general chick-raising wisdom would be so appreciated.

Looking forward to being part of this amazing community! 🐓🌿

Thanks in advance!

Hello! Welcome, and congratulations on your new chicks! The video says it is unavailable. It looks like it might be set to private?

I'm not the greatest at identifying chicks, but I'll give some guesses!
For the chipmunk colored ones, maybe easter or olive eggers. The one in front at the beginning of the first video could be a golden laced Wyandotte. Maybe a blue or lavender orpington for the grayish one. The black ones could be jersey giants and for the white one I have no idea but random guess maybe white plymoth rock. I'm curious to see what others guesses are!
It looks like you have a good setup. One tip I have is to set the food and water up on something like a flat rock or piece of wood. My chicks always knock a bunch of shavings into their water, and raising it helps!
Enjoy your new chicks, they're a ton of fun!

I think that you have a great eye! I was thinking some of the same. I was thinking that the chipmunk colored ones were Ameraucanas. Are those the same as EEs??

I would LOVE a Golden Laced Wyandotte and Lavender Orpington, so I really hope that your assessment is accurate! I hear that Orpingtons are very docile and great chickens to have. I also hear that EEs have lots of personality.

Thank you so much for the tip! Their waterer is on a brick and I will definitely be sure to follow your advice, and keep raising it as they grow.

I’m no good at id ing breed at this age, but I do have a few questions that might narrow it down for others, and some other pointers.
Where did you get them? What did the person/company/store say to you about breed or type, if anything? Also wanted to add that any suggestions you get will likely be a shot in the dark, as many breeds have nearly identical patterns, for example the chipmunk pattern is a classic pattern amount many breeds.
As for the ameraucana question, ameraucanas are a pure breed of chicken, they lay blue eggs and have beards, Easter egger (ee) is a term for any mix breed that lays eggs in blue or green or pink, usually a mix of an ameraucana with something else, or another blue egg laying chicken (cream legbar or aracana). Basically meaning that EEs can have many personalities and many colors and patterns, although chipmunk pattern is common with ones from hatcheries.
Hope this helps, and good luck with your new chicks!!!💕
