Using the questions template because I like things to be organized
using my phone and didn’t figure out how to change the font from bold until I was done
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Picked up our first chicks on Aug 22 and they started laying last week!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Seven! Planned for 6 but ended up with smaller birds than planned, so we added Princess Peach the next month.
we share the chicks with the neighbors, so we have more in our (much bigger) yard than the city allows. The plan is to share costs and care. But,,, I raised them in a tent in our living room and my hubs and I have had trouble giving up greeting them in the morning and making sure they are locked up safely after sunset. However, they built the tractor coop. The biggest cost so far, I think.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We picked up what our wonderful neighborhood store thought were: 2 Olive Eggers, 2 Easter Eggers, a Black Australorp, and a Chocolate Orpington. I didn’t read the fine print (not fine, I just missed it
) and didn’t notice that the EEs were bantams. The Chocolate Orpington wound up being the Black Australorp and the BA another Olive Egger. Little black chicks look so much alike on day 1! So, when we realized that we only had one who would lay normal sized brown eggs, we decided to pick up a Golden Buff the next month.
We shared the joy of naming with our neighbors:
- Penny, OE
- Dove, OE
- Maggie, OE with feathered legs
- Raspberry, EE (4 yo neighbor
)
- Victoria Peckham EE (husband
)
- Juliet, Black Australorp (to match our dog, Romeo)
- Princess Peach, Golden Buff (daughter after late arriving Mario Cart character)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Watching them roam the yard exploring! When they jump up on my lap or shoulder!! We are getting our first eggs and it is quite exciting! The first eggs were so much earlier than we expected that there were 3 when I thought to check the nesting boxes!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
It’s not necessarily a hobby, but I love weightlifting. I attend a small class every weekday morning. There are only a couple of men who show up sometimes and it is wonderful being surrounded by strong women of all ages. I’m 55 and not the oldest!
I’m in two (very) amateur bowling leagues and we go to most Kraken home games. I also like to read and we play cribbage with friends often.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I’ve been married for 15 years to a truly wonderful guy. Our daughter joined us in 2019 when she was 12. She is 16 now and a beautiful, charming challenge. If you want to hear how childhood trauma affects a person, I’m your gal. Our dog, Romeo, is a spoiled 9 yo mutt.
I’ve been visiting BYC whenever a Google search brought me here. I really wish that I had gone to the home page and read a lot more at the start of this journey!
