Hi! New member here. I’ve raised a flock in upstate New York previously that’s three times the size of my current flock.
Living In Midcoast Maine with about a dozen girls: RIRs, Buff Orpingtons and one Easter egger (since the rest were males).
I free ranged in the past but my girls are enclosed in a large run now. We have eagles, hawks, owls, fishers, bobcats and fox and that’s just what we’ve seen.
My girls will start laying the last week of July 22 since they’re newly raised this spring.
I also have a small, mature orchard, a bee garden, a kitchen garden, a berry patch, and a larger garden that gets expanded a bit every year as I can take it on. I grow mushrooms as well and use organic techniques.
The main thing I struggle with is keeping their five gallon waterers clean (they’re easy to fill but whether I hang them or mount them on pads, someone always manages to poop in or get dirt in the watering cups days before the containers need a refill, and knowing how long to compost the chicken manure and shavings before it’s ready for the garden. I’m a lazy composter! I don’t turn piles every day. And seldom turn them once a week…
