Hi! First Post here! I Love Orpington's, Cochins and can't say no to a beautiful faverolle. The Orps are my passion and I have set out to have as high quality orps staying as close to the English SOP as I can. I currently have Black, Blue, Splash, Isabel Chocolate silver laced and Silver Laced Orpingtons as well as a splash and a blue Cochin and my one good ole Faverolle! This year I have added mauve, blue mottled, black mottled, chocolate and lavender Orpington's and have hatched out more silver laced, chocolate silver laced, blue, black and Isabel!
As well as hatching all the purebred orps I have let my broody hens hatch out eggs which include my blue, and splash Cochins, faverolle, black, Isabel, silver laced and chocolate silver laced hens all covered by my blue orpington rooster. I am growing out all the "cross bred chicks" along with all the others just to see what colour combo and feathering beauties I create and will sell off the hens next spring and process the roosters. I can't say I expected the faverolle x blue orb crosses to come out all blue!
My next years plans include breeding pens of
black x lavender: to add outcross genetics to the lavenders using my highest quality blacks to improve my lavenders.
Chocolate x silver laced: to create my own chocolate silver laced flock from scratch. Blue x splash:increase my splash.
Chocolate x black mottled: to create my own chocolate mottled
blue mottled x black mottled to avoid splash mottled
My incubator has ran steady so I can learn and make every mistake possible so in future years I can have as much experience as I can. I know each of these breeding adventures will take lost of time, patience, culling and maybe going back to the drawing board but boy am I ever having fun doing it!!
When I'm not sipping my morning coffee looking at the chickens Im running around with a 4 year old boy, a 2 year old girl and 2 month old baby girl. My partner and
I run a 40 head purebred Angus cow calf operation. We exhibit our cattle at about 10 shows a year. This takes up so much free time, breaking calves, working hair, rinsing calves and showing them on weekends from July to October.
We have 6 boxers, a pot belly pig, the chickens, cows, a bunny. My passions are running, gardening, chickens, cattle, and photography.
Id love to have my own vegetable garden to add to this chaos we call life but my plate is always so full that's a "someday" kind of thing...
Im a registered holistic nutritionist but found my career in the automotive service industry as a full time service advisor (when im not on maternity leave of coarse).
I also love the good ole Kippen Jungle Chicken Calculator and have used that as a base guide for getting a general upstanding of crossing some different colours.
Thank you to anyone who read this far!
Im a yapper at heart especially when I get on the topic of the things I love!!
Ive been on this site many times over the years learning so much and finally decided to join as Id love to ask what you guys think are pullets and rooster go my 8 week old chicks. I don't tend to focus too much on what's what as I keep them all till they are ready to lay but im so curious as to what you guys think some of them are. Some are obvious to me others im just not sure of.
#1 is a Roo I just want someone to tell me he's not haha
#2 Hen right? but then at times I question it
#3 Hen
#4 Hen? I didn't include a pic of the for sure roo beside it cause then I feel everyone will say this is a hen but on its own I think the comb is popping up too much to be a hen?
#5 These pics are really giving a hen look but at times it just gives a rooster look of the delayed feathering vs some of the obvious hens
All are 8 weeks old today
