Hello BYC family,
My name is Levi Garrison and I am a new member here. I have a quick question for yall but will first introduce myself. (Question will be posted under introduction)…
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
- I am pretty new to having my own chickens yet have been around them my whole life. I received my first batch of egg layers (4 Rhode Island Reds) from TSC in February and our first batch of broilers (10 Cornish) from TSC in march.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
- As of yesterday, We processed our Broilers and now have our Egg layers. Sadly we lost one of our RIR’s and we now have 2 RIR hens and were surprised to find… well, an RIR rooster. (yep TSC lied about only giving us RIR hens)
(3) What breeds do you have?
- Rhode Island Reds.
(4) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like To share!
- My Wife (22yo) and I (23yo) were blessed with an amazing addition to our family just last year. His name is Stetson and He just turned 1 in February. We also have an Australian shepherd mix named Dixie, she is 3 years old. We live about an hour south of Atlanta Georgia of what I like to call in the middle of nowhere but in the middle of everything where everything is about a 15 minute drive.
(5) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
- We found BYC out through a couple of sources. I have gotten information through BYC members online while building my coop and raising our chickens including my coworker being a part of y’all’s community. I wanted to join so I could post questions myself and help any new members with the knowledge I have gained from the members here.
So now that yall know a little about us… my question falls under the fact of being victims on what yall know as “Chicken Math” Lol.
The question:
If I now have 2 Hens (RIR) and 1 Rooster (RIR) all being about 3 1/2 months old (plus how old they were when arriving to TSC), what would be the correct way to bring a new flock of 8 egg layers into the bunch.
1. When should I combine them outside?
2. How should I properly separate them, or are the reds young enough to not worry about separating?
• Note: coop is a 2’ elevated 8’x8’ walk in coop with 4 nesting boxes and 2 windows. This sits in the back right corner of a 14’x21’ hardware cloth run with an added hawk net covering the top of the run (coop is roofed of course).
Please let me know any considerations or recommendations you think would be good… and I will add a picture of the almost finished coop and unfinished run for y’all. I know this was a long forum but thank you so much for sticking around! God Bless!
