(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are raising chickens for the first time! We got our girls on May 12, 2020.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 3.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Just Silkies! One blue, one white, and one buff (at least we think these are their colors, they were an assorted bundle of Silkies from My Pet Chicken.)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
So far, raising chickens has been a really joyful and therapeutic experience for us. The best is when they fall asleep in your arms, but most of the time we just enjoy sitting quietly and watching them. They've been a wonderful distraction for us during the Covid stay-at-home situation.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Some combination of art, design, product, software, and technology take up most of our days blending the line between hobby and work.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We are Leanne and Will, it's just the two of us humans and our 3 chickens: Jane, Blanche, and Minnie. They're our only pets. We both work in tech, Leanne is a Product Manager and Will is a Software Engineer. We live in an apartment in Brooklyn and our chickens are living in a "lofted apartment" chicken coop on our roof. Not to worry, they have ample shade, protection from the wind, and space to run around... but yes, we have some unique constraints and have done a lot of reading through BYC to understand how to meet our chicken's needs in this situation.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
We found out about BYC a few months before we finally got chickens of our own. Leanne had wanted chickens for almost a decade and had a copy of Storey's Guide she'd read through time and time again, but there were just so many detailed questions left over. Since neither of us had chickens growing up and we have a unique living situation, we had to make our way over the learning curve. We had so many "stupid" questions getting started. There's something about owning chickens for the first time where we both were so afraid we'd kill them just because we didn't have any intuition for what was okay or not okay. BYC and the community here has been such an incredible help!
