New Sun Shade

Hubby installed a sun shade on the west side of our coop today for much needed relief in our VERY hot summer days - 105 today. Next - predator proof "screen" door (north side) and securing the area in front of the pop door (south) so we can leave those doors open at night and get a cross breeze from the south to the north.

After that, cutting some holes in the south wall of the big coop to get more of the southern breeze coming through (might do this before securing the pop door b/c it is a whole rebuild of the original 4x4 coop b/c it rotted out. By the time we are done it will be very well ventilated on all sides and we will need to start thinking about how we will sure everything up for the winter.

Got to get my babies some relief. Right now we are using fans and bottled ice at night - barely gets out of the 90s before 1am and then maybe 78 by 7am. Very uncomfortable for them these days. Praying this high pressure system moves on soon! Told hubby we need to think about an AC next year.

We thought about that, but every thing I have ready about this with the humidity levels (central texas - high heat, high humidity) would be an issue with misters/evaporative coolers.

The only time they spend in the coop is at night, or when laying eggs. The only ones that hang around the run during the day are momma and babies. Momma is currently weaning the babies, so pretty soon everyone will join the flock which free ranges all day long. Right now the flock is spending most of the day under the heavy shade of our front deck. We also don't have electricity run to the coop and are currently operating fans on an extension cord - electrical outlets are on the to do list.

I have asked hubby to run the electrical out to the coop - it is about 150 feet from the house. When he does that we will most definitely do some type of permanent cooling option for our hot summers.

Might give these a try. At that price point it might be worth the cost. Plust the PC fans are sealed and basically no contact. Lots of people are concerned about putting fans in due to the possibility of electrical fire. These were not meant/made for that but it is an added benefit.

Thy. We opted for electrical fan bc unless the solar fans have an incorporated battery, they won't work at night. Still in mid 90s at midnight.
