So just doing my quick introduction. We are a couple in Australia who finally managed to buy a property with enough land for a flock of chooks and vegetable garden.
We have been doing OK but always keen for more tips, and help as we start establishing ourselves.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm goingbto say yes to being new to chickens. Last time I had them I was a child.
We got our first few pullets about 8 months ago and they are healthy and doing well, laying regularly etc (3 x Isa Browns and 3x Australorps)
We then wanted to increase the flock and add some colour and variety so purchased 3 day old easter eggs chicks. Unfortunately we have had a round of bad luck with them and only have 5 of the 8 left (they are now about 14 weeks old.
We had a neighbour also gift us 8 of her 10week olds babies (they are now about 14 weeks old as well) and are a silkie roo x ? Mixed bunch.
We are certain the 5 EEs we have left are all female as they were from a breeders and professionally sexed.
But our friends - we know we have one beautiful rooster a bunch that look like hense but I honestly have no clue lol
(2) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Watching their personalities develop and their friendship and bonds grow. They are just lovely and friendly and I love just sitting in my yard watching them!
(3) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
there's the two of us and every second week we have my son at home with us. We also have 2 large dogs (german shepherd and a germannshephered x) who guard the property and the chooks. We also have 3 cats.
I started our vegetable garden at the end of winter and have just had our first full harvest of beetroot, potatoes, rhubarb etc and we have broccoli almost read as well.
I have never been a green thumb so to be able to start living off our own land (eggs and vegetables) is just an amazing feeling.
I am looking forward to learning more about raising our flock and hopefully learn how to sex our babies lmao
