I am new to chickens.I live in NW FL and have two, a rooster that is a blue copper Marans and a hen that is a black Copper Marans. My grand-daughter brought them home this spring from her fourth grade incubator project at school. I Let them free range in our small 1/3 acre yard and they go into their entertainment center hutch we built each night on their own. They aren’t laying yet since they hatched Easter weekend. Yes Im a softie when it comes to my grand babies and birds. I love watching my birds antics and listening to their conversations. The rooster has become aggressive the past two weeks when he started crowing but I hope he calms with time. I’ve missed cuddling with them as baby chicks and having them sleep in my lap or on my shoulder. Raising birds has been therapeutic for me and given me a desire to be outside and get exercise.
I have a teenage daughter with multiple disabilities and struggle to sleep at night and get away from the house. This has given me an outlet. Im also an artist and enjoy knitting and reading. I have also enjoyed learning to garden and have planted a pollinator/ perennial garden. My next step is setting up an indoor Kratky hydroponics garden. I have two dogs and two Male Guinea pigs as well.
I have quail in cages and an aviary which I hope to enlarge within the next year. I have jumbo white, pharaoh, celadon, pearl fee, golden manchurian, Schofield silver, and a few blues. My favorites are the German Sparklys. They have a very docile temperament which makes caring for them
Much easier. I use the deep litter method with my quail but have been thinking of using sand in a few areas. I’ve had several questions concerning incubating eggs, quail and chicken raising and have enjoyed what I’ve seen in google searches. Thanks for having
Me.
