Hi everyone!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I am definitely new to chickens! I decided to get a few as a fun thing to do and it's been awesome. I've had my girls for almost two years now.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I have four chickens.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Three Rhode Island reds and one silkie. I had four reds, but one of the chicks died and was replaced with the silkie. She is one week younger than the reds.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I enjoy everything about it and I feel like I've learned so much. But I haven't bought eggs in almost 1.5 years and that's probably my favorite part.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I enjoy gardening, reading, napping, yoga, beekeeping, and video games.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

It's currently just me, my cat Oscar, the four chickens, and I have two beehives. I lost my coonhound several months ago at the ripe age of 16 and I'm thinking about getting another hound. I work in veterinary sales. The job is pretty boring, but it affords me to live the life I want!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I found BYC almost three years ago when I decided I wanted to start researching backyard chickens. I have been a long time lurker and finally decided to join after I was able to take care of my girls sour crop thanks to the wonderful advice and tips I found on this forum. I am so appreciative of everyone's knowledge and guidance.

I look forward to being a part of this community and getting to know everyone!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Not saying this will happen, but your RIRs are going to grow to be half again or twice as large as the silkie, and she may get bullied by them. It's really a good idea if you could get a couple more silkies, as there's power in numbers.
Hi! I was worried about that too, but the girls have been together for years and I've never had a problem. Honestly, the silkie (Chiquita) is kind of a bully when she wants to be 😂
