Hi guys! My broody Easter Egger hatched one chick so far, maybe two by today if the other egg didn't quit. The chick hatched yesterday afternoon I'm guessing. I moved her, the chick and the other egg into a brood box separate from the other hens and roosters inside the coop this morning. My question is should I move them back to where they were or keep them separate? My hen laid and hatched her chick in everyone's favorite nesting box so I was worried about the chick being attacked; especially as it starts to become more active. I currently have 3 pullets about 5 months old that I am integrating into my flock but it's been stressful on the other hens causing some pecking, bullying etc. I was worried if the other hens saw the new chick they would assume it as a threat and attack it.

I would definitely seperate them. Give them their own little pen and feed chick starter/grower. The hen can eat it just fine and it will be good for the momma. Congrats on the new baby!

Thank you! Hopefully it’s a little female lol the baby is beautiful!

I always separate mom and babies. It just makes everything easier for me and the hen doesn't have to work so hard to protect the chicks.
I was worried about my other hens attacking it. The momma is my smallest hen too but as soon as I moved her and the chick the other girls were ALL over that nesting box lol

My daughter has about 20 hens and one rooster. One broody hen hatched out two and, after three weeks, they are running around with the whole flock. She never separated them. There is another hen sitting on eggs. They are supposed to hatch out the end of this week. I didn't have the issue because I have only one hen, one rooster and two chicks

Ive been allowing my hens to raise chicks in the flock for several years. Chicks hatch in the box,mom brings them out of the nest by 3rd day. I put a small fence around them for a few days then open it up for her and chicks to explore the coop. My flock of 16 hens, older chicks and a rooster free range in a 300x200 fenced area. Ive not had any problems yet.Hen will take them outside when she is ready. My coop is very big which seems to help. Enjoy your new chicks. Here are some pictures of my set up.

My coop is smaller but they have access to an enclosed outdoor run. I tried letting the other hens see the chick but they were pecking at it and the mother hen was worried about fighting everyone instead of protecting her chick

I always separated mama with her chicks into an adjacent partition of coop and of run for about 3 weeks. But this year, I have in a separate area, a small flock of 3, one is the rooster. I allowed one hen to hatch just one egg because I couldn't break her broodiness. The small flock accepted this baby and the rooster also seemed protective of it.
IMG_7574.jpeg When the chick was a month old, mama weaned him. It was apparent it was a cockerel. Since then, all the adults constantly chase him away. I suppose this is how a flock raises a rooster. Teach him to respect them. Now he's 2 months old and I haven't decided what to do with him. If he respects me as well, I guess he can stay. I do wish I hadn't given her that egg!!!!!!!
