(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am currently working on hatching my first chickens, but I have helped friends care for their chickens in the past. I got these babies on 4/24/25.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? To be determined, I have 14 eggs incubating, hoping for a decent hatch rate between the two machines 🤞🏻

(3) What breeds do you have? My mother's favorite breed has always been Silkies so that is the first one I will be owning so she can enjoy them while I care for them lol. I hope to indulge in larger dual purpose breeds in the future, but I am already obsessed with Black Copper Marans and different types of Orpingtons!

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Companionship, the challenge of raising a new animal and getting to know the different breeds and individual personalities!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Dog showing, sewing, and apparently creating too many building plans lol

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I love my dogs more than anything, and my mom built a life for me where animals are entirely front and center to my greater joys. I'm excited for the chickens to become a part of that, and hopefully it wont spiral too quickly into other small farm animals until my boyfriend gives me the land to go wild on lol

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :DI have actually been using it for a lot of the research I've been doing this past year, but did not think too much about it until I got the "Backyard Chickens Guide to Coops and Tractors" book, which properly introduced me to the site I was already and unknowingly enjoying.

Welcome! I am new to chickens as I have never even been around them. My husband used to help his grandmother with her chickens so he is not as green as I am but I have also been here doing a lot of research.
What kind of dogs do you have?

Chihuahuas! The build of my coop and the safety of my chickens is one of my biggest priorities from my dogs and other predators, coyotes and owls are already something I have to watch out for so its a little easier of a transition of skill lol
Honestly this website has been wonderful every step of the way, everyone is very kind and giving with information to keep everyone's flocks strong, I wish you and your husband the best of luck!
