Constantly Talkin Bout Chickens
Hello!
I'd thought that I would share this recipe with you all, because it is pretty simple and fun to make.
I was researching different chicken cookie recipes one time, but they all involved molasses, which I never have on hand.
So, another family member and I decided to make up our own recipe.
Now, we've only made this recipe once for them for their Christmas "present" and they are pretty heavy so it's best to only give them to your chickens in the winter time. It has NO flour because flour-based foods are NOT GOOD for birds (a little bit is okay,) so we substituted that with blended up oats instead. Or you could use plain flour. Shouldn't hurt.
Here's the recipe:
Ingredients
~3 cups oats plus more
Oat flour
2 eggs
Big spoonful of yogurt (plain or vanilla) plus more
Flax seeds
Bird seed
Chicken feed
(sorry about the not exact measurements.)
Equipment
Mixing bowl
Large spoon for mixing
Blender
Metal pan
Cookie cutters
Rolling pin
DIRECTIONS
First, blend up your 3 cups of oats.
Add the oats, eggs, yogurt, and flax seeds into the bowl and mix. It should form a sticky dough (at least that's what the recipe card said
) If it is too sticky, blend up some extra oats and add it in.
Dust your surface (cutting board, metal pan, etc.) with oat flour, take dough ball out of the bowl, and kneed it.
Kneed in some birdseed and chicken crumble. You can also add mealworms but we didn't have any. And then roll the dough out with the rolling pin until it's your desired thickness. Basically roll it out like you're rolling out sugar cookie dough if that makes sense
Using really small cookie cutters, cut different shapes out. Since it was Christmas time, we used Christmas cookie cutters. Garnish with yogurt, extra birdseed and/or chicken crumble. We added little greens that we got from outside on each cookie.
Now, give them to your chickens!
Our idea was that the chickens would peck at them, but no. Each chicken grabbed a cookie, ran away with it, and swallowed it whole
So if you have smaller chickens or bantams, it might be a good idea to tear them up into tiny pieces first.
I hope this recipe turns out good for you and that your chickens will love them.
