I have 3 baby chicks one and two weeks old. They get very loud at night in the food bowl. Is it okay to take away the food at night so they will be quiet so I can sleep? Or do they need food 24/7?

Short answer: yes, you can, but they won't like it much.

Chicks want food when they're awake. If you're using a light bulb as a heat source, they're going to not be on a regular sleep schedule, and they'll want food all of the time.

Some people use a Manna Heating Pad (or some variation thereof) so the chicks are in the dark, and asleep at night. Obviously, they won't want food while they're sleeping.

How and where are you brooding your chicks?

My thoughts - if chicks have light 24/7, they should have food/water 24/7. Even if you take away food and they have light - they are going to be up at all hours.

What kind of noise are they making that is keeping you awake? Are they peeping loudly at night or just making normal chick sounds?

Read up on article MHP by Blooie, the only way you'll get quiet at night. They learn night & day, less skittish and alot calmer. As Wyorp Rock stated, if you're going to use light 24/7, they'll need food/water 24/7 & the chirp seems to never end.

Oh, if you decide to go the MHP way, make sure the heating pad is the one with no auto shut off ... I think it's the Sunbeam 732-500.

Just normal peep sounds as far as I know. It's not a panic peep just chatter between them. I took the bowl up last night and they seemed a little quieter because they like to get in it and scratch and peep very loud excitement.

Not under standing "regular heated for humans" ... If you're meaning the heating pad, yes that's what I use. Reading the article on MHP (Mother Heating Pad) by Blooie, gives you her experience with it and "construction", along with other ideas other have come up with. They'll get louder as they get older :lau
Funny! One minute they're very loud, next minute they're asleep.
