My first forum! Hope I can get it posted. Lifetime chicken lover Ranch to backyard. First attempt at saving problem baby. It is one of 24 newbies. Very special, but maybe hopeless. Put some eggs under a lamp in garage due to a bad momma who finally managed not to crush 1 baby. Decided enough was enough. Didn't really expect any hatchers. Next morning 3 eggs were pipped. Did it because we were already protecting two small babies that had been abandoned and abused. Biggest one of abused died immediately, but tiny one is thriving with two others who hatched naturally. Last one had to be helped. Born with curled toes, 1 week leg, 1 splay leg, unable to stay upright head to one side. We chose to work with it. Bright white wing tips could be from parents could be wing bars from vitamin deficiency. After four days we realize we are about out of time. It will drink water, very active, have not seen it really eat yet because it spends all its time trying to get upright. Legs are taped, toes are straightened. Head is now straight. Such a strong will to live it is heartbreaking to watch it struggle. WE had confined it in an upright position so it could strengthen legs, but one leg is very weak still. Everything we have done has helped so it is hard to give up. Have it in roomy box where it can move around now with food on floor(rough flat towel)l and make sure it takes water with vitamins frequently. Just looked. He is upright. As a child I saw chicks survive that lost feet from a early freeze, that is why I am trying to save this one. but I don't know now. Can a chicken with only one useful leg survive. Will this weak continue to strengthen, and how can I get him to eat?

Well we decided to put our troubled baby in with the other three so he could have some examples to imitate. After some initial checking out the others have lost interest except in the tape on the legg. He is getting stepped on some, but he is motating around to. Drank a little water with my help while another chick also drank. Seems to work better on shavings. No success with food yet, but hopefully he will imitate. Can now right himself easily and scoot along on feet. Not sure if one foot power or two, but did see weak foot moving. Problem seems to be in leg.

What have you been giving him to eat, that he doesn't appear to care for? You can try hard boiled mashed egg folk- usually chicks love it. Unflavored yogurt, warm oatmeal, etc. See if these perk up an appetite.
