Nut shells, peanuts, pistaccios, etc. okay for chickens?

we eat lots of nuts and therefore have lots of shells...i didn't know if the chickens could have fun pecking around on them. i know they wouldn't eat them, but i didn't know if it would keep them busy pecking around or not.
 
I haven't had chickens for all that long, but I personally don't bother putting shells (unless there is a sunflower seed inside) in with the chickens. I do, however, put them in my wood stove occasionally! My chickens love leftover kitchen scraps, and scratch to peck at. I wouldn't want to get their hopes up that there was something to eat, since when I give them something, it's always yummy!
