This doesn't happen often, but I have sometimes seen one of my female ducks mount another female in the water. They do the head bobbing and just like they do when the drake wants to mount them, and then one of the girls gets on the others back. I have seen 2 different ones do it, and we have drakes so it's not a matter of no males around.
Is this normal, or do I just have weird ducks?

Actually I just saw a post similiar to this one on the goose section. Apparently the females are showing who is on top of the pecking order.

I've seen the same thing go on in the wild, too. I think it's a dominance and/or social thing, but not really sexual. Usually, I see males do this.

If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with.

yeah, they do that. lol

despite the names, I have 6 female ducks (well, one we call "Transgendered" lol) and they do this all the time... it's just to see who's in charge... Just watch them in the water, so a bigger girl doesn't accidentally drown a smaller one.

LOL, now I'm going to sing that to the girls when they do that!

My Khaki Campbells mount each other when they're really happy, like a fresh tub of water to splash in, or a big handful of greens to eat. I think one will be "submissive" first, then one "dominates" not the other way around. New batch of ducklings coming tomorrow, straight run so hopefully these gals will be happy to have a man or two around.
