Only a head, wing, and liver left.

Here's a puzzler: I know it's pretty common to find a dead chicken with its head missing, but what takes the whole chicken and LEAVES the head? I found one of my young birds' head, a single wing, and its liver in my yard this morning. Very few feathers left behind, no blood at all. The head appeared ripped off rather than chewed: neck feathers and vertebrae still attached to it, clean removal from the body. My backyard trail cam only shows eyeshine warily glancing around as whatever it was enjoyed my bird at 4:30 this morning; the rest of the footage is too dark to make out anything else (sooo helpful, that cam. LOL)

Just curious what y'all's thoughts and opinions might be on who dunit. Knowing won't change the fact that my dumb bird chose to roost outside last night instead of in the closed barn with everyone else, but it might help me pick what size live trap to start putting out. Thanks in advance!

Update: I noticed my dog sniffing a back corner by the fenceline and went out to find the rest of the chicken body. Only the upper half had been eaten. Looks like whatever got her tried to drag her under the fence and got the body stuck, so ate what it could and left. Slightly less mysterious now that I have more evidence, lol! My best guess would be raccoon, I suppose.

Raccoon seems likely!

:welcome :frow Coon or a fox would be my guess. I have several cameras up on my property and most nights see a predator on at least one camera. Last night, when the predators roam here, I got a coyote on one camera. Sadly another camera that should have gotten pictures the batteries died which I will have to replace today. On another camera I captured an armadillo. I have some on posts that I can move around. Good luck...

Curious if you ever figured this one out! I had the same odd experience. I am thinking fox now, though my husband was convinced that it was a bobcat-we pretty well ruled that out.
