Hi! Two days ago a wild duckling showed up in our literal doorstep (we live in the country) but we can't get him to eat, I have read a lot of threads on the site but was wondering if maybe giving specifics and identifying the duck would help in taking care of him?

I've made a brood box and he has a light for warmth (also it's summer here) and drinks water from a spoon, he might have started drinking from his "bowl" (a diy waterer I saw here), we are not sure, but won't touch food.
He might be a couple days old at most and in very high spirits, waddling around and jumping and climbing all over me. He also preens quite a bit and cleans his feathers. He takes a bunch of naps and sleeps through the night just fine, so I don't think he is particularly nervous. He is very vocal too, chirping and doing something that might be a whistle.

He poops fine too, not very frequently but he doesn't appear to be blocked at least. I've tried finely chopped apple and grape, bought chick feed (tried to get duck feed but no luck), mixing it with water, a bit of egg yolk, he maybe tastes things but doesn't really eat them. He seems kinda tiny too.

I read that they can go 48hs without food if they are newly hatched and as the little guy is fine I tried to just give it time but tomorrow I would really like him to start eating? Does anybody have suggestions?

I'm having trouble identifying him, he kinda looks like a mallard but has an extra eye stripe, we are in Argentina and I looked up local ducklings but they don't look exactly alike. I can't really call wildlife for help cause well, we live in Argentina lol.

My main worry is that I'm following advice mostly for farm ducks and he is wild. Thanks in advance!!
(Sorry for the super long post, I'm just worried)

it doeant look like any wild duckling ive ever seen, But its some cute!

give him a warm bath in the sink, just deep enough that its over his tail, That could help his digestive system loosen up

If he exercises and poops there shouldnt be a reason why he wont eat wet chick feed

Do you have a kitchen scale so you can weigh him?

@Miss Lydia - they're from Argentina. :) if you give him a small bowl.of just watered down - mashed chicken feed, he might start eating it on his own with no other choices... kinda like when feeding a baby baby food, they're gonna spit it out cause they've never tasted it, but eventually they eat it.
Or as @Miss Lydia said you could try insects if it's a species that only eats insects. Just small ones like mealworms in water or crickets, you could get them at the feed store dried.

And he's probably imprinted on you by now, so congrats- you're officially momma now and forever. ❤

Well you can tell I just got up because I read Argentina and it went right over my head. @Juge have you looked up wild ducks of Argentina? The lake duck might be it. Not sure though. Do you live close to water? Saying you might go and see what kind of wild ducks are there and get some pics and maybe we can help identify?
What @Jpat said and @Raenh mixing some warm water in feed may get it to eating. Just gently put the bill down into it just enough for the little duckling to get a taste. Or put some on the tip of your finger right in the bowl just like a mama duck she has to show them what food is.

Thank you so much everyone! I'll go and try the mash now, and scrambled egg. We are right in the middle of a national holiday so any vet that knows anything about ducks or could have mealworms is closed, but I'll try that too on Wednesday.

There's a really big lagoon kinda far from my house but the ducks there keep their distance and stay in unpopulated areas so I've never seen them up close. Also the soy fields a couple km away have natural ponds but they are all private property :(.
Even so, as long as the duckling starts eating I can wait and see how he turns out. :)

Should I give him the mash warm or wait for it to cool completely?

Can you order some duck starter crumbles? Water them down a lot and dip his bill in. He looks very young. Sprinkle some feed on paper towels and see if he'll eat. I'm guessing a day old. Too young to be eating yet. Don't chill him in the bath. Can you give him some electrolytes? Just keep him warm in a tote with a lamp or something. He has to have one side about 90 degrees. He'll eat when he's ready. Tomorrow he should be more interested. He's not going to starve though. He's not more than a day old. He's cute!
