painting metal shed

I was hoping to get one of those low cost, Arrow sheds from Lowes/HD to use as a coop for my chooks. My only issue is that all of my outbuildings (house, guinea coop, horse barn) are the same color and I would want this coop to match. I've read about how you have to use abrasives on galvanized metal to paint it and the same would be true with vinyl coated/enamel coated metal.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Or painting one of the poly resin sheds seems to be the same process...

I would love to hear any pointers or experiences with doing this sorta thing!

its all in the type of paint you buy. I would talk with a paint professinoal. Not Chicken people They usually WING it.

Aww! I love it when you guys wing it!! I will tap into the paint pro's brains at Lowes, but YOU folks are the experts when it comes to practical experience...if anyone can recommend something to use or something to run screaming from, it would be great...or if I should just forget about painting a metal shed all together...

No problem painting Steel or Alum. but you need to use a power sprayer as paint brushes don't do a good job on steel or alum. I love Lowes but, I think you should get your paint at a lumber yard that sells Pole Barns and the Steel as they will sell you a Industrial Grade Paint and it will last longer. I painted our steel Run-in sheds for our horses 6 years ago. They have sun faded alittle but still look good. A Power Spray Painter will make for quick work too - I painted our 2 coops (8' x 8' & 4' x 8') in 45 minutes + time to tape and cover doors and windows. Pic below is of right after painted and before we added the white trim to them. When I built my chicken coops last Spring, we had left over steel sheets from other pole barns and we wanted them to be a different color than horse barns. I just ordered more chicks today so, the old red wood - garden shed in the back ground in pic- will be converted to another coop this Spring and painted to match others. After seeing the paint on our coops - My son wants me to help him paint his Alum. sided house this summer. LOL Katie

Those are beautiful, Katie! I LOVE the color! You have definitely given me hope on painting a shed to match my barn...was this galvanized steel? I keep reading about how the galvanization process leaves this film on the metal that makes it impossible to paint. But industrial paint was never mentioned. I'll have to give it a try!

My parents farm has several very large galvanized grain bins on the farm and they can be painted with a sprayer. I went and checked my paint can for you and the paint I used on my steel coops is a Pittsburgh Exterior Paint. It went on great and I didn't have to thin it for the sprayer. The paint is soft and will scratch easily until the paint has cured for the first few days so, try to paint when weather is going to be good for a few days. Good Luck. Katie

If the Galvanized Metal you are puttting on the roof is New and still real shiny silver you can spray it down with a power washer with warm water and Dawn soap to remove oil finish on new metal, rinse well and let dry and then it should paint fine. Post pics when you are done with your coops : )

Go to a place that sells paint only. They will have some good advice on a primer. Primer acts as a device to stick between two different surfaces. Therefore once primed you can pretty much use what ever paint you need to use. all these sheds are galvanized first then painted next. Its part of the technique for protecting the metal.... as a matter of fact most of it is Galvanized then painted BEFORE the metal is even Bent. Non painted parts will come from a different part of the factory.

WRT having to sand or pre work the surfaces you can do this chemically. Pressure washed with TSP which is biodegradeable, would be good enough. Just dont get any on you. It will take the sheen off the coatings. Then you can paint. But check with the paint place first.
