Someone donated a whole tub of biodegradeable newspaper pellet cat litter to us. It's the shape and size of regular pellet litter, just made of recycled newspaper. I was wondering if this would be appropriate bedding for the baby chicks when they hatch (Monday!). Is there any reason why not? If not appropriate, we'll go with paper towels and then wood shavings . . .

If it is the size that chicks could eat, I would avoid it at this time. They are just born and will pick up anything in front of them. When in tummy of chicken, paper(a wood product) could expand and cause undesirable consequences. Not to mention indigestible. A recycled paper product may have traces of inks, that I would avoid myself. Using it for cats to litter, is not same as potentially eating such. Use pine shavings. They are larger in size so not attractive to be munched on.
WISHING YOU BEST........... and :welcome
