I’m currently raising a batch of 7 chicks and one in particular is growing up be a mean little bully. My Penedesenca is always pecking at and pushing around the others. So rude! He/she already has a pink crown and very thick legs. This batch is only 3 weeks old but I feel like I already know this ones a boy. Am I crazy?

Penedesencas have huge combs so I wouldn’t take that as a sign just yet that you have a boy, but I could be wrong. They are also not considered the friendliest of breeds. In fact I raised one female chick in with six others, she was the first one to be named. We named her “Indy” because of her fiercely independent personality. She is hands down the hardest one to catch, even when roosting at night.

Didn’t know that about the breed! I’ve been hand-raising chicks for 15+ years and this Penedesenca is the feistiest one I’ve come across. I have a Doberman and this chick will jump up and peck it’s nose through the grate. Very bold.

I was told they aren’t a “beginner” breed for sure. I have a Doberman too! I can’t say any of my chickens have been that brave toward her lol. The dog is overly jealous of the chickens because, how DARE we we’ve given them treats that should belong to the dog!

Another Dobie mom! Yay! What are the odds :p They are THE goofiest dog out there. My girl gets jealous of the chicken treats too. She’s especially jealous when the chickens get grapes (since dogs can’t have grapes). Very unfair, yes.
