Hi all,
I am the proud servant to chickens, Guinea fowl and peafowl. I have been breeding pea fowl for 5 years now and every year presents it challenges, losses, successes and learning curves. I have 2 pea hens and 3 peacocks. I have 2 pairs locked in separate enclosures for breeding and 1 male free ranging. Both hens have laid. One’s eggs hatched today. Her mate is still in with her as I can’t let him out with the other males during breeding season because he is very dominant and aggressive toward the other males and I don’t want anyone hurt. The others eggs should hatch in the next week. Her mate is very timid and submissive towards the other males. I have let him out about a week ago and he is being tolerated by the other male who is free range. My question is this. Is it just a coincidence that these 2 males are now hanging around the pen that my hen and other male are in or is it that they are either interested in, or wanting to protect the chicks that have just hatched. Will peacocks help protect peachicks or are they a threat to them.

Peacocks are not likely to be a threat to chicks. Occasionally yearlings in the same pen may be overly interested in the chicks but the hen won't put up with any aggression and will chase them off. I have seen cocks help feed and protect the chicks but I have never run him out and then let him return so some caution is advised.
