Hi everyone,

(Sorry, I'm a newbie - I hope this has been posted in the right place)

I need some advice regarding a Pekin duck egg. It's currently on day 5 of incubation, and has has been automatically turned in my RCom Mini Pro incubator.

I’ve avoided candling as the eggs were purchased via eBay. However, I noticed this evening that the egg seems to have a saddled air sac? I didn’t pick up on this when the package first arrived (I also made sure to let the eggs rest before placing them in the incubator)...

The embryo seems to be developing very well, but I’m concerned about whether the air sac could pose a severe issue at this stage. Could this lead to failure later in incubation? Would it be worth adjusting the incubation process, such as increasing humidity, reducing turning, or elevating the air sac end?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I've never encountered this before, so can't really gauge how bad it is.

Thank you so much!

Hi,

I order hatching eggs often and that isn't too rare to have a saddled egg. Mine always still hatched. On a rare occasion, one doesn't but you can tell it's alive or it may pip more to the side than normal. If it pips, I give it time. If after a day it's not making much if any headway, I'll assist.

Here's a great guide to use if you have to assist hatching. Hopefully not though as that's usually where the leg/neck issues happen.

Welcome to BYC! Good luck and hope you have a great hatch!
