Hey all I just got my first pekin duckling on June 9th, '12 and it's a little yellow fuzzball that peeps all day. It can't have hatched any sooner than the thrusday or friday before. I just have afew questions about when they get older. First, I'm wondering when I'll be able to tell the gender. As I said before, it's still in that peeping phase so I'm guessing the difference in quacks is out of the question. Its tail feathers curl a tiny bit but it still only has downy feathers, and I'd prefer not to vent because as I understand it, that can injure the duckling if you're not very good at it.
My second question is whether they normally sleep alot. I have a dog and when we got her as a puppy she slept almost 10 hours a day. So do ducklings sleep as much as a puppy? Or are they more or less active.
Third: When will it be safe for it to actually SWIM around in water? As in water where its feet don't touch the bottom.
Fourth: My duckling seems to like to be held and it climbs and jumps up my shirt if I hold it close to my body. Will it be like this when it's older? It might create an uncomfortable situation if a big white duck is trying to sit on my shoulders.
My fifth (and last! I promise) question is: Does anyone have pictures of a pekin's stages of growth up to a year or so (male or female) with maybe 2-4 weeks at most in between pics? And if so would not mind posting them.
