Hello, I have been searching high and low for a perennial shade loving vine that can grow on my coupe in Southern California. There are so many recommendations for full sun or part shade only. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have attached a photo of the side of the coop I would like to grow the vines on . Thank you!

Since your in So Cal I would look at a drought tolerant vine. Only problem with having any plants near chickens, is that they will eat it. So it's a losing effort.

That particular area in our yard gets a lot of water because of the avocado tree which needs regular water. Just having a hard time finding something that will do well in shade and is safe for chickens. I transplanted a Jasmine vine there which I quickly took down because they immediately started eating it so I double-checked and apparently it's not good for chickens.

Welcome to BYC.

What purpose do you have for this vine? That will help us figure out something suitable.

In general, I would not grow a vine directly on the coop itself but, instead, put it on a trellis next to the coop. Perennial vines tend to be very hard on the structures they attach to.

Thank you. It's just to hide the side one side of the metal fencing in the picture and it will never reach their house. Our daytime coupe does not have a roof so it will be kept only on the one wall. Mainly decorative. Thank you again

Sweet potato? It's a vine, edible.

Have you looked at any passiflora? Since you get a little bit of sun and plenty of water I wonder if the common passion fruit would work. You might not get much fruit but It's safe for them to eat.

Thank you. I have looked into both of those but decided against them because of the sun issue. Do you have experience growing these and shade? Thanks again

I haven't grown either one in shade but my experience with other plants is they don't grow as quickly or produce as much fruit/flowers. Worth a try, since both of those are cheap.

My chicken enclosure is part of my shade house where I grow orchids and other shade plants. They even get to have chicken tunnels under the plant benches. I have various species of vining Hoyas in there, although not directly in the chicken run. Hoyas are listed on most pet and bird sites as non-toxic, although some people have a reaction to the sap. In most parts of the country, Hoyas are considered house plants, but if you are in an area of So Cal that doesn't ever get close to freezing, you can grow many species outside in dappled shade.

Passion flower vines will grow anywhere. Years ago a neighbor planted some. They invaded our yard and we are still fighting them. They are very invasive!
