I recently posted on an old thread about my 14 week old pheasant that is having trouble standing and walking. Here’s the link to the thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...nything-cant-walk.469846/page-2#post-28064627

I’ve been giving him a quarter tablet of vitamin B complex and half of a vitamin E 400 iu liquigel every day in some gamebird crumbles and water mash. He has been eating and drinking very well. A couple days after I first noticed the problem, I made a little sling for him to sit in to keep him upright and help him stay off of his legs.

He’d been in it until about three days ago, when I took him out to check his progress. He was able to sit/lay properly and stand up (though shakily) so I left him in his cage without the sling. Over the last few days, he’s had some defecation issues. Some poo sticks to his feathers and since he can’t get up and move it builds up around his vent. Twice I’ve had to bathe him. But I have a concern… yesterday I noticed his vent looked weird. It was red on the sides/corners (not bloody) and it looked abnormally wide and almost stretched. He was also having goopy and stringy white poo, which seemed to me like it could be an infection. Today, however, his poop looked normal again. His vent still looks bad though, and wasn’t pulsing like it should.

(I couldn’t get great pictures, my camera wasn’t focusing and it’s hard using only one hand while holding a squirming bird in the other LOL)

I’m not sure what to do. I put him back in the sling to let the poop fall and hopefully help keep it away from him, but he seems more lethargic and is closing his eyes again. He still eats, but more slowly and not as vigorously now.

I would appreciate advice! Thanks in advance!

I responded to your post in the old thread, but I am not familiar with pheasants. If the B complex and vitamin E have not helped, I am not sure what else to try. It sounds like he has multiple issues, and might not survive. Sometimes it is best to consider the quality of life before continuing to treat him. I would consider putting him down to prevent any suffering, but I understand that is hard after a spring for him so long.

We're you feeding any grains to it? I don't have any better idea than the next person, as to what the issue is?
If you can find a vet, I would strongly encourage you to have a visit. If it does not survive, I'd send it into a state laboratory and have a detailed necropsy
preformed.

I don't know pheasants either, but that tush looks messy. Does it stink? It almost looks like it could have vent gleet.

I have a chick that's now a month old. To save a long story about it being pushed 2.5' while still in the egg and living to tell about it, it has digestive issues. Its vent was red and swollen, but its whole body has been bloated since shortly after hatching. I don't see its vent pulsing either, but it's got many issues, so nothing surprises me.

I give it probiotics every other day, vitamin water every other day, and sometimes in the middle, fresh water just one day.

Twice a day I gave him a few drops of melted coconut oil and put it on his butt. It helps clean the mess he makes pooping. (Not pasty butt, it's below the vent.) Sort of like your pheasant.

The redness has gone down in the past couple of weeks from what it was. Its poops have improved, too, from a runny mess to much thicker, so that's helping the messy butt.

I think the poop sticking on and around their vents caused it to be red. Straining trying to poop could also have done that to your pheasant. I would try giving it a little bit of coconut oil orally just for a day or two. Some freeze it and break off a couple of pieces, but I just warmed a little bit up and fed it to him. That acts like a stool softener, so it might help his vent too.

I would continue with the suggestion of Vit E, B-complex, and some scrambled eggs to go with the E for better absorption. But I'd add the vitamin water/probiotic regimen as well.

I can tell you're trying so hard to save him, so hopefully your pheasant improves! Hang in there!
